Wednesday 10 April
A 30 minute boat ride and we taken to another island haven off Nuku’alofa. Sunset Island Resort may not have the finesse of Fafa but it is Australian owned and run by local Tongan islanders.
It has all the elements of a relaxing escape: comfortable beachside fale, water on our doorstep, snorkelling, canoes for a time we may feel energetic (ha ha) free wifi, piped music, in the open-air bar/restaurant overlooking the ocean and no tourists… we are only sharing the resort with one other guest! True bliss.
After lunch we did a wee snorkellette trip to a nearby reef… So many colourful fish… Some coral but nothing like the Barrier Reef.
Dinner was superb after our sundowners. My whole snapper and kumala (sweet potato) fabulously presented and extremely tasty. Gordon had a pork loin chop and gave it the thumbs up. Dessert was rum bananas and ice cream while being serenaded by a group of local men singing in beautiful harmonises backed up by guitar and ukulele. I can’t help but feel like a queen of my own island. Off to sleep being caressed by the incoming tide lapping at our beach 10 metres from our fale.
Atati is much bigger than Fafa and tomorrow we shall go exploring.
It does sound like Heaven! Might have to put this one on my list. xx
