What’s my volunteering role?

My main role focuses on reviewing and continuing to deliver the English for Hospitality curriculum at Sanon Training Restaurant in the beautiful historic area of Bagan.

I’m also currently mentoring Sanon’s social worker – Khin Lay to take over the teaching role. She’s a fast learner, has a fabulous sense of humour and is competent in English. I think she will make an excellent teacher.

We have 23 (post school) young people from all over Myanmar taking the one year course. All have various levels of disadvantage but are very keen to forge ahead and improve their lives – so are delightful to teach.

99% can read and write English which helps – but few understand what they are reading so this is part of my challenge!

  1. Hi Sonia, keep up the great work! I hope your energy level will withstand the heat! I’ve found it pretty challenging these past few days! I leave tomorrow, but we’ll definitely keep in touch. As far as I know, Eric and Zoe have two girls in mind for the next Sanon Training program. Take care and all the best to both of you!

Lovely to see you in the classroom Sonia. Who’d have thought your ESL Post Grad studies years ago would find you in Bagan teaching & mentoring Hospitality students, in this important youth program. Sounds & looks like you have great rapport; am not surprised. Excellent whiteboard skills too!

    1. It’s funny that one can slide back into a teacher mindset so quickly. Must have been the good Mackie Training!

  4. Did you do ESL training before you left Aus? Mel
