The Road to Mandalay

The line taken from Rudyard Kipling’s iconic 1890’s poem has become a three dimensional sensory experience as we time travelled from one decade to another on a river boat.

The ‘road’ is in fact the Irrawaddy river, a name synonymous with mystique and adventure from days gone by.

Our boat departed from Mandalay and meandered to our ‘home town’ of Bagan passing villagers whose life is determined by the ebb and flow of the river.

Pagodas with their golden ‘umbrellas’ shimmer in the morning sunrise, and the putt putt sound of diverse river craft break the silence as they pass us on their daily journey carrying locals and supplies to various points along the vast waterway.

New Year’s Eve was a delightful experience with music, fireworks, Scottish shortbread (thank you Anita) and Iron Bru (Scottish drink) entwining themselves with a fashion parade showcasing Burmese traditional dress.

I must pause and have a little boast here as Sonia and I won first prize and were crowned Pandaw (boat name) King and Queen.

Sonia getting thanaka applied to her cheeks – very Myanmar!

The River experience does appear magical….and to reach the “royal status” if only for a day or two!!! That is the Wow factor..
If that is not enough; a hot air balloon – supplies the exclamation mark to the new year!!
May 2020 treat you kindly as you continue with your volunteering activities…Mum…xx
