MP gets the thumbs down in Myanmar

By Gordon…

Wednesday afternoon is English movie club. A chance for the students who are off duty, to enjoy a movie at my makeshift cinema and scoff biscuits, popcorn and other goodies.

The main purpose is to complement and strengthen Sonia’s English lessons however, sourcing movies that not only play right through but also have the appropriate translation on the subtitles can prove challenging.

This weeks choice was good to go! Just over 2 hours, clear and precise spoken English, subtitles that married up, a solid story and no embarrassing scenes! what could go wrong

Mary Poppins, a stalwart in cinema history, had all the ingredients for a wholesome family flick. Believable characters, outstanding special effects, questionable Cockney accent from the American actor Dick Van Dyke and a warm fuzzy family who find tranquility within their home with the assistance of some hired help.

Feedback was harsh in the extreme with my would be film critics (students) having little appreciation of this genre and the eccentricity of this much acclaimed classic.

In the film selectors defense… the students have some new words in their repertoire: Chim Chim Cheree and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Words that I use twice … at least every 10 years.

  1. Oh Gordon … one of my all time favs!! Maybe they need to see it again to appreciate the subtlety of the movie ?!?!?!

  2. I always preferred Chitty Chitty Bang Bang……….although that may be a little ‘young’ for such a sophisticated audience……..:-)
The recent Paddington is great but might not be available yet………
Keep up the great work Gordon!
